Marlborough College
One of the first great schools to go fully co-educational, a strong arts tradition and a royal alumna.
The character
Marlborough is the classic co-educational full-boarding school: a thousand pupils in sixteen houses, a busy Saturday-school week, excellent art and music and the downs for running. It is social and confident rather than intellectual, and its pupils leave with friends for life.
Good for
Sociable children, co-educational boarding, sport and the arts
Less suited to
Day pupils, children who want a small school
Getting in
Register by Year 6, pre-test and interview, Common Entrance at 13; a sixth-form entry of around forty places.
What it costs in total
At about £ 58,000 a year for boarding, the 5 years from 13 to 18 add up to roughly €381,000 in today’s money including typical extras, before fee increases, tutoring and flights. The Education Cost Calculator adds inflation, extras and a second child.
Fees are rounded 2025/26 figures from the school’s own schedule and change every year. The school’s current fee sheet prevails. The picture is an impression of the setting, not a photograph of the campus.
