Impression of the setting of Winchester College

United Kingdom · Winchester, Hampshire · Founded 1382

Winchester College

The most intellectual of the great English schools, the oldest continuously running school in the country and a curriculum called Div that has no exams.

The character

Winchester is for boys, and since 2022 sixth-form girls, who read for pleasure. Div, the daily unexamined lesson in history, literature and ideas, defines the place, and the entrance exam is the hardest in the country. The atmosphere is scholarly and slightly eccentric; sport is played well but is not the point.

Good for

Intellectually hungry children, musicians, families who value ideas over polish

Less suited to

Children who need to be told what to do, elite sport

Getting in

Register by Year 6, Winchester's own Election or entrance exam at 13, interview. Girls enter the sixth form at 16.

What it costs in total

At about £ 60,000 a year for boarding, the 5 years from 13 to 18 add up to roughly €398,000 in today’s money including typical extras, before fee increases, tutoring and flights. The Education Cost Calculator adds inflation, extras and a second child.

Fees are rounded 2025/26 figures from the school’s own schedule and change every year. The school’s current fee sheet prevails. The picture is an impression of the setting, not a photograph of the campus.
