Stiftung Louisenlund

Sailing on the Schlei, a strong STEM programme with a science centre, and both the Abitur and the IB.

The character

Louisenlund is the sailing boarding school of northern Germany: the harbour is the heart of the campus, the wind is constant and the school combines an old-fashioned belief in outdoor challenge with a modern academic offer. Pupils are bilingual, active and independent; the atmosphere is friendly and unhierarchical.

Good for

Sailors and scientists, families in Hamburg and Scandinavia, bilingual German and English

Less suited to

Children who dislike weather, families who want a big city nearby

Getting in

Reports, trial days and interview; entry at 10, 12, 14 and 16.

What it costs in total

At about € 45,000 a year for boarding, the 6 years from 13 to 19 add up to roughly €302,000 in today’s money including typical extras, before fee increases, tutoring and flights. The Education Cost Calculator adds inflation, extras and a second child.

Fees are rounded 2025/26 figures from the school’s own schedule and change every year. The school’s current fee sheet prevails. The picture is an impression of the setting, not a photograph of the campus.
